Birds in Moab and Arches & Canyonlands National Parks

My partner Thu and I recently spent about a week in Moab, Utah and the national and state parks that surround it. This is a (probably incomplete) list of birds we identified during the trip.

  • Black-capped Chickadee
  • Canyon Wren
  • Common Raven
  • Curve-billed Thrasher
  • Eurasian Collared Dove
  • House Finch
  • House Sparrow
  • Juniper Titmouse
  • Kestrel (fairly certain; saw this one while driving)
  • Ladder-backed Woodpecker
  • Pinyon Jay
  • Red-tailed Hawk
  • Spotted Towhee
  • White-crowned Sparrow
  • Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay

Also, while we were driving through Arches National Park at night, a large fluffy bird swooped in front of the car and was very briefly illuminated by our headlights. We think it was some sort of owl, but we're not sure what kind.

A collection of photos of a few of these birds follows. The photos are also available, with descriptions, on my pictures site. Unfortunately I didn't bring a great birding lens (I was using the Tamron 28-300, which I now hate), so some of these are extreme crops.

(Why have a 45 MP camera if you're not gonna crop now and then, I suppose?)
